What is cholera? Cholera is a deadly diarrhoeal disease that leads to dehydration (loss of water and salts from the body)

Cholera is still present in Somalia and can kill within a few hours if not treated. The symptoms are watery diarrhoea several times every day; diarrhoea looks like cloudy rice water and vomiting.

Avoid contaminated food by doing the following. Eating food while it is still warm - Keeping cooked foods and vegetables covered. - Boiling or washing vegetables before eating. - Washing Fruits properly and peel the skin before eating.

Cholera is preventable. Practice good hygiene and sanitation measures below. Wash your hands with soap after using the toilet, before eating or serving food, after cleaning children who used the toilet, and before and after caring for a sick person.

When cholera is suspected, stay hydrated with Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), as it can save your life. Seek medical help, continue giving ORS on the way to a health facility, and keep breastfeeding your baby.
